New Compact Coopertiva's

We are pleased to announce that we have just taken delivery of two ultra compact accordions from the highly respected Cooperativa factory in Vercelli, Italy.

The first instrument is a 72 bas 34 key model. This ultra compact and lightweight accordion is a brand new model, designed for the weight conscious player. Although the casework is a similar size to a 48 bass accordion, this instrument boasts 72 basses and 34 full size treble keys, due to Coopertiva's patented "Super Ballo" extended keyboard. A fantastic accordion that gives you quality and range without the weight.

The second Cooperativa is a 60 bass 34 key, also with three voice. Once again, it is a highly compact and very light instrument, ideal for those not requiring the diminished row of chords on the left hand.

For further information on this, or any of our other accordions, please visit our website www.theaccordionshop.co.uk, email us at sales@theaccordionshop.co.uk or phone us on 01344 873717

News from Guildford Accordion Club

We are delighted to present operatic soprano Denise Leigh and accordion virtuoso Stefan Andrusyschyn.
Since her operatic debut in 2003, Denise has gone on to sing all over the world, appearing in opera and oratorio throughout Europe, and visiting Dubai with Stefan to raise money for Foresight, a charity funding ground breaking research into sight loss. She has recorded two best selling albums and continues to appear regularly on TV and Radio as a studio guest. She was honoured to have performed as headline talent in the London 2012 Paralympic Ceremony.

The musical collaboration of Denise and UK National Champion Accordionist, Stefan began in 2006 and they married on 24th December, 2007. Denise decided as there’s never anything good on the telly on Christmas Eve, they may as well get married.
They have entertained at some spectacular venues and it is a pleasure to welcome them to Guildford Accordion Club.

Tillingbourne Accordion Orchestra will also play a few tunes.

We will, of course, have the Playalong so do bring your accordions.

Followed by!!
On Saturday, 26th April we will be hosting a concert featuring an orchestra from Holland , the Torkest Accordion Orchestra. You can check them out on YouTube and look at their web site, www.torkest.com. They seem to be a fun orchestra and they can play well too. The concert will also feature Tillingbourne Accordion Orchestra and hopefully there will be a combined effort to round off the evening!! The Mayor of Guildford will be in attendance to welcome our guests from Holland so do come along and support the event.
Even though we have two events next month, we hope you will come along to both evenings. The club needs your support and we want to give the Dutch orchestra a huge welcome to England. They are also a very good orchestra so should be worth hearing.

Stolen Accordion

A customer of ours has just had their new accordion stolen from their house in Spain. The instrument is identical to this one http://www.theaccordionshop.co.uk/shop/all/id-3316 apart from the fact that it is black in colour. The most identifying thing about it the instrument that it is a rare 78 bass model with a extra row on the left hand over the standard 72 bass set up. If anybody is offered an accordion matching this description, or has any further information, please contact Mr. Baine at geo_hazel@hotmail.com

New Roland FR8

We have on order or first Roland FR8 models
With new features including Dynamic Bellows Behaviour technology, onboard battery charging, new sounds and effects and a built-in looper.

The all-new Dynamic Bellows Behaviour technology is designed to deliver a playing response identical to an acoustic accordion by adjusting the air transfer in the bellows in real time depending on the selected register and the number of notes played.

Both instruments are equipped with traditional accordion sounds as well as over 180 orchestra and percussion sounds, Roland's Virtual Tone Wheel organs and feature four multi-effects engines with dedicated effects for Accordion, Orchestra 1, Orchestra 2 and Orchestra Chord sections.

The FR-8's new user interface is more powerful and easier to use, with a larger colour display also three programmable chin switches, which let players control a variety of functions without lifting their hands off of the keyboard.

One of the most exciting additions to the FR-8 is the onboard looper, which provides the ability to record and overdub accordion performances. The MP3/WAV song player lets users play along with pre-recorded tracks for practice and live backing via optional USB memory.

More layering and zone setup options are now possible in the right-hand keyboard modes with the ability to play up to four tones at once, while left-hand keyboard modes now include layering options as well.

The button model the FR-8xb is equipped with a redesigned button-type keyboard, using a piston-style mechanism that is similar to an acoustic button-type accordion. In addition, the buttons are made with a synthetic pearl material for a professional look and feel.

A message from accordionist Martina Schwarz regarding a show for children this week. Thanks as ever for all the support you show me at my gigs. Please continue to try to support any accordion events in your area.
All the best

Please circulate this information in the accordion world or to anyone interested in this half term entertainment. We opened today this charming dance theatre show for children.
You never know, it might inspire a very young person to take up the accordion.
Come and see this lovely new Green Candle Dance theatre production "No Fear", created for young audiences,
but enjoyable for all ages. It's full of live music/ songs (all music composed and played by me), and of course lots of dancing.
The ideal half term entertainment for all the family (20th-23d February in Oxford House, Bethnal Green),
catch it before it goes on tour.
For more details and bookings see attached flyer,
Please pass this on to anyone interested, especially to
people with young children
hope to see you there

News From Guildford Accordion Club

In the rarified world of the classical accordion, Milos Milivojevic stands out as a phenomenal exponent of the instrument. The London critics have been unstinting in their praise of his work:

“Milivojevic’s artistry on the humble button accordion took the breath away - indeed, his coruscating transcription of an organ chorale by Mendelssohn made one almost wonder whether we actually need those thundering giants. I’d put money on this brilliant young performer opening a whole range of new musical worlds” - Michael Church, The Independent, March 2008

“Already a virtuoso” - David Murray, The Financial Times
“A hurricane of imaginative invention” - Hilary Finch, The Times

Born in Serbia and now living in London, Milos Milivojevic will be at the Guildford Accordion Club at 7.30pm on Friday 18 January 2013. Milos studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Owen Murray from 2002 – 09, winning every prize available to him. His work as a soloist and in groups such as The London Tango Quintet, Paprika and Cosmos have earned him an enviable reputation, and he will share these experiences at Guildford both by playing solo, and engaging in a Question and Answer session with the audience.

Tillingbourne Accordion Orchestra will also play a few pieces and are hoping to be joined by Milos for this performance.

We will also have our popular Playalong starting at 7.30pm so make sure you bring your accordion and arrive early to enjoy the evening.

News From Guildford Accordion Club

NEWSLETTER --- NOVEMBER, 2012

Welcome once again to Guildford Accordion Club and a very special welcome to our guest this evening, Roman Voloshchuk and also to his lovely wife, Lyubov.

Thanks go to everyone who came along to the Super Orchestra Day here on Sunday, October 28th. This was another great success and we are looking forward to a repeat next year. Make sure you book as soon as you hear about it to avoid disappointment as this year it was fully booked and some!!

On a sad note, we have been advised that Albert Harre passed away recently at the age of 98, almost 99 years. Albert was Greenwich Accordion Club Chairman for most if its existence and we send our condolences to his family on behalf of Guildford Accordion Club.
It was Greenwich Accordion Club which inspired members of Tillingbourne Accordion Orchestra to start Guildford Accordion Club. After meeting members of Greenwich AC at the Caister Weekends in the late 1980s, TAO members were invited to evenings at Greenwich AC and from there it was decided to start Guildford AC in Ripley Village Hall.
Albert was always happy and smiling and loved to welcome visitors to the club, but his greatest pleasure was to put on his Accordion for the Playalong at the end of the evening. He was very excited to have a new Accordion for his 90th Birthday. Although the club closed a few years ago, some members still met up each week to have a playalong and Albert was still playing up until a few weeks before he died.

A few festive dates for your diaries:-
Wednesday 5th December – Uxbridge Accordion Band Christmas Party with American Supper and entertainment - Iver Village Junior School, High Street, Iver, Bucks., SL0 9QA. Admission £4. Bring a plate of food and your instruments to play Festive Tunes.
Info David and Angie – 01895 235601 or email david.lukins@btinternet.com

And of course Friday 21st December is our Christmas Party Night – bring food to share or just bring yourselves and your accordions plus friends and anyone else you can find on your way here!!

News From Romano Viazzani

Just a reminder to come and see us at the Pheasantry, us being in this case Cabaret Verite` (Bethany Jameson, Myself et al) on November 4th. It's really important we try to fill the venue as there will be lots of press there that night so please try and come. There's some great Piaf songs and some other original and funny cabaret numbers. In addition we're doing a special 2 for 1 offer on tickets via phone direct to the venue and bookers must use the password "EAA Discount" Hope to see you there.

Please see our showreel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCe5N31zJ00 for a sneak peek.

And here is the link to the ticket website http://www.pizzaexpresslive.com/popList.aspx

It’s a really lovely venue, great atmosphere and Pizza Express food, which is really good and not to pricey.
We need to keep our network posted and really push this one. The aim is that after this, we get bookings for fees rather than with ticket sales split.

It should be good fun!

Just a reminder to those participants – bring a music stand and pencil (and your accordion of course!) Apologies for stating the obvious, but!!!

For all of you who are not actually involved in the Day, the Evening Concert should be a real treat and not to be missed. As well as hearing the Super Orchestra playing an arrangement specially created by Ian Watson for the Day, you can hear Tillingbourne Accordion Orchestra, Morley Accordion Orchestra, Watford Accordion Band and the Duo of Julie North and Ian Watson. The concert will run from 7.30pm until 9.30pm and admission will be £5.00, refreshments included.
Bring all your friends and family for a great evening.

We have a special guest artist, Roman Voloshchuk, coming to the club next month. Some of you may have heard him elsewhere but this will be his debut at Guildford Accordion Club. Roman was Choirmaster and Orchestra Conductor of the National Choir and Orchestra of the Ukraine. In this capacity he has given 450 concerts around the world. He studied the accordion from the age of 7years, is a trained classical musician, folk musician and singer with a beautiful baritone voice. Roman is a sensational artist who has played for the Duke and Duchess of Westminster and will, next month, be playing for us. Make a note of this date in your diaries.

TIME: 1.30 for 2pm - until 5pm...ish. Doors open from 1.15pm. ENTRY: £6 (under-16’s free) - includes refreshments.
VENUE: Westbury Leigh Hall (erstwhile church on the A3098), Westbury Leigh, BA13 3GN.
Emergency tel. (0798) 946-6091. Car parking in front of hall or down the road.
CLUB THINGS
* The one and only HARRY HUSSEY will be our entertainer this meeting. He generally likes to play requests from the floor so have some suggestions up your sleeve. His particular forte is swing / big band music from the Great American Song Book, brilliantly played, with exactly the right atmosphere and singular chords! And it's all done by ear. (I'm afraid I can't be with you as I'll be at a family
celebration of my mother's 100th birthday!)
* OUR LAST MEETING, chaired by Harry Haigh, featured Pearl Fawcett Adriano, who played us a wonderful selection of lively classical music and much loved ballads. Then, using her pedal operated dual accordion facility (acoustic or electronic), she played us jazz and 'accordion' numbers. Her mastery of both keyboard and bass is staggering. Particularly rousing were her renditions from the opera 'Carmen'. Additional music was provided by the warm-up group - Ralph Cornish, Jill Martin, John Baker, Simon King and Jan Debenham. The playround was contributed by Adrienne Griffiths and Harry Haigh; Sue Coppard, Ralph Cornish, Jan Debenham, Jill Martin, Jenny Powley - who was able to pay us a long awaited visit, Ralph Cornish with Jill Martin, Simon King, who we had not had the pleasure of hearing before, and Adrienne again.
* FUTURE MEETING: Our Winter / New Year meeting on Sunday 20th January will as usual be our brief AGM followed by the Members' Concert, which gives you plenty of time to start practising... You have been warned!
* CHANGES: "Everything changes but the Law of Change" as my father used to say! So, first the Good News, from Jill Martin:
"Some members of the White Horse Accordion Club would like to propose having a monthly meeting in addition to the quarterly established meetings. We are hoping to arrange the first Sunday of each month at 2pm for our meeting but this will need to be confirmed as to the availability of the hall. Further information will appear in the newsletter as to when this will take place. For more information please call Jill Martin 01985 300344 or Ralph Cornish 01278 783097."'
Now for the upheavals Two members of the Planning Committee need to pass on their jobs:
(1) Jack Beecroft is sadly unable to continue booking our guest artists. He says that bookings are in place until April next year and he will be happy to pass any contact details to whoever takes over. He is happy to continue managing the WHAC website.
(2) Sue Coppard (ie. me) has been doing the jobs of newsletter editor and committee co-ordinator for 17 years and now needs more time to cope with other commitments as she is falling seriously behind on all fronts. She is willing to give help and tuition, if needed. (These jobs need not be done by the same person.) If nothing else, please write a little para. for the newsletter about an accordion event you've been to and tell us all about it. So please, good members, stick your hands up and offer to fill the gap. Your Club needs you...

NEWS, VIEWS & REVIEWS
CASTELFIDARDO
Glyn Russell has kindly written a review for us - thank you, Glyn:
"1993 witnessed the purchase of my Hohner Atlantic IV from my then music teacher. This turned out to be the start of a very lengthy journey, both in time and distance. I was to become a student at the Accordion Repair and Technicians School in Duluth, Mn. USA. From which I graduated June 1995.
"My adventure has taken me to Castelfidardo twice. Why two times? That would be because I haven't been able to afford more visits. It is the place where history lives and breathes still. "They don't make them like they used to!"... Yes, well actually they do. Many of the factories that we visited during our pilgrimage are not too far removed from the mock-up workshop that is on display in the Museum. What gives our accordions heart is the hands on, personal touch and attention to detail that ensures that quality is put ahead of quantity.
"A visit to Castelfidardo is both educational and uplifting in all manner of ways. I encourage you all to have the experience of reward and fulfilment that comes from tasting the hospitality that emanates from the Mecca of accordion manufacture. It is my feeling that we will be reading the announcement of another Castelfidardo Grand Tour... Maybe we shall be travelling companions."
BRILLIANT ACCORDION P.R.
Fortunately I heard about the internet broadcasting of WORLD ACCORDION DAY (6 May 2012) from Romano Viazzani just in time. This important event was distinctly under advertised, which is why we didn't tell you about it beforehand. Anyhow, as I have just discovered, you can still watch all 24 hours of it, brilliant playing from many countries, brilliantly executed, if you google World Accordion Day 2012. (UK performs on Hour 20). Compered and directed by Frederic Deschamps, Grayson Masefield and Mike Rossi, to whom grateful thanks for all their hard work.

That's it for now, folks, have fun, keep squeezing -

Romano Viazzani's Latest Appearances

We have recieved an email form Romano Viazzani telling us about a few events that accordion fans may be interested in attending in the coming weeks. the details are as follows

"Hi Everyone, Firstly you will see details of our mini tour of On The Banks Of The Seine which I'm doing with Bethany Jameson, Declan Daly, Ben Hazleton/Alan Gibson. Hope some of you can make it.

Vérité Productions Presents
ON THE BANKS OF THE SEINE

By Bethany Jameson and Romano Viazzani

2012 Summer launch tour

A dark and beautiful cabaret-with-a-difference starts to unfold …

Fancy a stroll around the back streets of Paris, a tour of underground Buenos Aires and some show-stopping chansons without having to cross the English Channel? Bi-lingual cabaret singer-songwriter Bethany Jameson and master accordionist Romano Viazzani are launching their stunning new Vérité Quartet and are proud to welcome Declan Daly on violin and Ben Hazleton/Alan Gibbson on double bass into the team. Expect gorgeous music, plenty of glitz and glamour, gentle (and some not-so-gentle), witty new lyrics and tunes you will hum all the way home. Sources of inspiration include Fascinating AIDA, Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Victoria Wood, G&S, Doris Day, Marlene Dietrich and Ute Lemper.

The wonderful songs and compelling story telling start to roll out, but gradually, it is as if cracks start to appear in the veneer of this elegant performance. The worlds of the songs, the audience and the band start to become interwoven, to both tragic and comic effect. The band and crew steer themselves and the audience through however, with everyone’s dignity (mostly) intact.

There are the gorgeous French chansons (1930s – 70s), Piaf, Brel, Hot Club de France… sultry Tangos by Piazzolla and Galliano, some unexpected gems and a wealth of new cabaret songs. Romano Viazzani has created stunning new arrangements for all the songs and has composed rich, quirky and charmingly ‘retro’ music for the new pieces, which explore lost love, politics, the beauty products scandal, looking after ageing parents and of course, picking up younger men in bars! Just Her Younger Man (Jameson/Street) featured in last year’s show The Accordionist and was judged ‘a showstopper’ by London Fringe Theatre.

Summer 2012 Launch Tour Dates

29th June - The Green Note, Camden, London, 7pm doors open, 9pm show www.greennote.co.uk

30th June - The Lyric Theatre, Bridport, Dorset, Saturday 2.30 pm and 8pm www.the-lyric.com.

1st July - The Winchester Pub, Bournemouth, Dorset, 7.30pm Tickets www.bethanyjameson.co.uk

5th July - The Battersea Barge (short showcase at Cheese'n'Crackers) www.excessallareas.com

All with post-show chat with audience to gather feedback for show development.

Ian Watson and Neil Sanders have sent the following info on the forthcoming events given by the Morley Accordion Orchestra. Please support this if you can too. I have attached the flier too. See Below:

Morley Accordion Orchestra is giving two concerts in early July.

On Tuesday 3rd July, from 12.00 to 1.00 p.m., there will be a free concert in the Emma Cons Hall in Morley College (51 Westminister Bridge Road - across the road from Lambeth North tube). This is one of the Morley Lunchtime Concerts series - the Accordion Orchestra concerts are aways among the favourites. The Orchestra will be playing a lively and varied programme, with some solo performances and duets by their amazing leaders, Ian Watson and Julie North.

Then on Saturday 7th we will be giving a full-scale concert in the Lost Theatre, on the Wandsworth Road. This will be our first London concert outside Morley College, and we will be joined by guest soloists - Sarah Crisp (Violin) and Christine Kinsella (Soprano). I've attached a flyer and link to the Theatre's website. Have you been to the Lost Theatre yet? If not, here's your chance to discover it - it used to be the lecture hall of the Polytechnic of the South Bank, on Wandsworth Road opposite the junction with Lansdowne Way and has been converted into a smashing little theatre. (I can send you the full programme for the concert if you're interested.)

Do come to one or both!

Neil

New from Romano Viazzani

Dear Accordion devotees,
A few items of accordion news about forthcoming events that may interest you.

Firstly please see the attached flyer for a concert by RAM accordion student Servane Le Moller and Guitarist Manus Moble on the 25th May in Oxford. (This will please those of you in that area as most of my news always seems to be London-based).
Manus Noble and Servane Le Moller
Recital
St Michael’s Church, Summertown, Oxford
Friday 25th May 7.30pm – Tickets £10

Servane Le Moller was born in Luxemburg in 1985 and started to play the accordion at the age of 14 in the class of Maurizio Spiridigliozzi. From 2005 to 2010 she studied at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen (Germany) under Mie Miki, and in September 2010 she was given a scholarship to do her Masters at the Royal Academy of Music with Owen Murray. Whilst performing in London and throughout the UK, Servane regularly performs in Luxemburg in solo, ensemble and orchestral concerts, in particular with the Luxembourg Sinfonietta.

In 2010 Servane performed the world premiere of the piece ‘Partita’ from Maurizio Spiridigliozzi, in the Philarmonie du Luxembourg. An award winning accordionist, Servane is always looking for ways to innovate with unusual combinations of instruments and also others artists, not necessarily musicians. Classical accordion is a quite recent instrument, and Servane is looking for exciting ways to promote and develop the possibilities for her instrument.

Two of the UK’s brightest young talents present music from all over the world. Programme to include works by Bach, Piazzolla, Giuliani, Barrios, Takahashi, Britten, Gubaidulina, Ginastera and more.

Manus Noble is one of the most exciting and innovative of today’s generation of young Guitarists. In 2010 he was awarded a First from the Royal College of Music before being given a scholarship to do his Masters at the Royal Academy. He was also given Awards by the Musicians Benevolent Fund, Countess of Munster Trust and was awarded First Prize at the 2011 Ivor Mairants Guitar Competition.

Recent recitals have included concerts at the Bridgewater Hall, Sage Gateshead, Purcell Room, Kings Place and several international guitar festivals. Having developed a certain flair for contemporary music, extended percussive techniques and also composing and commissioning new works for the instrument, Noble's wide and varied concert programmes are always well received by audiences.

For those in London or those who may be visiting London this Thursday 17th there is an Accordion Department event at The Royal Academy of music too. Click on the link below for information

Thankyou SO MUCH for sending the back strap for my accordion.

You cannot know how much pleasure the accordion you sold me has been. I am, I think addicted !

I am a rather ancient lady who might even qualify for the Guinness book of records for learning an instrument at my age. However it is going so well that I have joined a local Morris group and enjoy the whole experience and have made a lot of new friends.

Once again Chris, thank you. You are a star !

happy Rochdale Customer

I just wanted to say thanks to the man in the Rochdale Shop who helped me choose my accordion. I got the Excelsior and at the time I was just starting lessons, not knowing if I would take to it or not. Well, I am delighted to say that I have taken to it and my lessons are going well. I am very pleased with my accordion and I might at some point into the future buy a Roland! Thanks again for your patience and help while I was choosing my accordion.

Denise Leigh & Stefan Andrusyschyn

Bath Abbey Concert Series are thrilled to be hosting An Evening with Denise Leigh & Stefan Andrusyschyn on Thursday 14 July at 7.30pm.
Soprano Denise will be singing a lovely mixed programme of songs from Bach to Bernstein and Rossini to Rogers & Hart. She will be accompanied by her husband and renowned accordion player Stefan Andrusyschyn, playing both piano and accordion, including some new arrangements for voice & accordion, plus a Piazzola tango or two!
Denise has been blind since she was a young child, but that hasn’t stopped her following her dream of being an opera singer. Her breakthrough came when she was joint winner of Channel 4’s programme Operatunity in 2001, and she hasn’t looked back since, singing with English National Opera, at the Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Palace (for members of the Royal family, including the Queen) and with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, The BBC Concert Orchestra, the London Handel Players, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also taken part in the BBC’s Proms In The Park, Songs of Praise and Friday Night Is Music Night.
Denise has a close association with the RNIB, and there will be a retiring collection for this charity at the end of the concert.

News from Romanno

Just a note to let you know about the Classical Accordion Concert at Our Lady & St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 22, Roxborough Park, HA1 3BE. Following last year's success the Classical Accordion Department of the Royal Academy of Music will be playing a selection of transcriptions and original works for Classical Accordion this coming saturday at 7.30pm. The instruments sound wonderful in the church's natural acoustic and the playing is of the highest calibre as these players have already won many major national and international competitions (one of them even won Lithuania's Got Talent!). We know we have stiff comptition this year with the Champions League Final on the TV but I hope that some of you will come and support the event. There is food served too in the interval (in the church gardens weather permitting) included in the price of the ticket. Tickets are £10 and are available from the Parish office 0208 422 2513.

Update from Romano

Dear Friends,

Firstly, let me thank you for all those who came to see The Accordionist in Poole, Exeter and at the New End Theatre in London. It's so important to support accordion events as it creates a demand and inevitably leads to new people hearing and appreciating our instrument. We got some great reviews and are contemplating taking the show northwards this time on a tour. Will let you know when.

On Saturday 28th May, the accordion students of the Royal Academy of Music will be playing at 7.30pm at Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Church, 22 Roxborough Park, Harrow on the Hill, Middx, HA1 3BE (Tel. 020 8422 2513). For some students, like Ksenija Sidorova, graduation looms and we find that suddently they are already in their final year at the RAM. The concert will feature some beautiful music brought to life in the wonderful acoustic of a church whose size is perfect for an accordion recital. I believe there will be food involved too as last year (Bangers and Mash). Not all details have been confirmed but I will send a reminder regarding ticket prices nearer the date.

Then there are another two events the week before, sadly on the same day! Sunday 22nd May. However since one is in Canterbury and the other in London both events will probably not affect eachother. Please see the relevant fliers attached.

Note that the Owen Murray Accordion Day event in Canterbury also includes a composers workshop in the morning at 10.00 am and at 3.30 pm a workshop for teachers and students. Students may bring their accordions and play in this afternoon workshop.

FRIDAY 15TH APRIL…. 21ST ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

PEARL FAWCETT ADRIANO….
THE FIRST LADY OF THE ACCORDION

Pearl was born in South Yorkshire and started playing the accordion at the age of eight. She had many successes in her early life winning both the Junior and Senior World Championships.
After graduating, with Honours, from the Royal Manchester College of Music, for the study of Piano, Cello, Singing and all branches of Music, she became a Professor at the same college. Later, deciding to concentrate on performing, she turned professional. Pearl has given concerts all over the world. She was the first female accordionist to undertake a solo concert tour of the former USSR. On the classical side she has performed concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall and Leningrad’s Philharmonic Hall. She also had appearances with such orchestras as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and BBC Northern Symphony. On the lighter side there have been many appearances of TV and BBC Radio.
Pearl’s vast repertoire ranges from the classics to light music, French Musette and continental, and no matter what kind of music she plays, her marvellous technique and control of the instrument ensures that the music is interpreted to the full, which has greatly impressed many people around the world.

News from Romano Viazzani

Just to let you know about my next project which will be touring over the next few months. We open at The Lighthouse in Poole, Dorset next month, then The Bike Shed, Exeter the following month ending in a three week run at the New End Theatre Hampstead, London in April. I will remind you about this last venue again nearer the time as it's a still way off. Filling a theatre in London for 3 weeks will be no mean task so I hope you will try to come and see it. The story is about Jacqueline (Bethany Jameson)- an Edith Piaf tribute singer who escapes her unhappy marriage and musical partnership with her forceful accordionist husband (played by me!) who has forced her to sing only Piaf songs. After years of absence on the stage and battling with achoholism she is reunited with a new younger accordionist (played by me also!) who has held a torch for her for many years.
I have written the incidental music and most of the songs, but there are some Piaf songs too as well as a gem by accordionist Karen Street.

See the attached flyer for details. Hope you can come. Don't tell me which night you are coming as it just makes me nervous! Surprise me after the show.

Don't forget to cheer wildly at each song even if you hate them, hate the show and never want to see me again!

All the best

Take it Away scheme rules are changing!

News from the Arts’ Council has given warning of changes in the terms and conditions to the fantastic interest free loan. These changes are considerable and come into force April next year. This is of great concern with regards to the eligibility criteria which in greatly diminishing. As of April next year (2011) the interest free loan will be available only to those aged between 18-25. It is to influence more students or those in full time education. It is also not viable for an elder to purchase on behalf of somebody, even if that ‘somebody’ falls into the correct age gap (so, the parent cannot use this scheme to buy for his/her children). The cheme will still be available for application for the foreseeable future, but with the criteria noticeably narrowed. This does, however, allow for a greater degree of help for those continuing their studies after school and into further education.

These changes are as of a direct consequence of the recent Budget cuts announced. It has been necessary for the Arts’ council to make headway for great savings in the coming years of trade. They are, in their words, ‘targeting more priorities lending wise’.

In short – be fast and beat the hike in VAT and these changes! The 0% loan is still here until April 2011 so don’t delay!

News from Romano

Hi Everyone,
Firstly, thank you to all those who came to see Songs From a Hotel Bedroom at Watford Palace Theatre, New Wolsey Theatre and Covent Garden Opera House. Sorry I didn't see all of you but it was lovely to see those I did see. I hope you enjoyed Kurt Weill's lovely music. It's been a busy year and there are one or two further events you should know about.
Firstly, after a 3-year break I will be playing with Gilad Atzmon again for a Orient House Ensemble 10th Anniversary re-union concert on November 18th 2010 which will be great to be playing with many of the past members of the ensemble. Hope some of you can make it. See below for details.
Secondly, on the 22nd November I will be doing a solo concert at Black Country Accordion Club (Rowley Regis Disability Club, Rowley Regis, Birmingham (Info: 01215594620-Barry) for those in the West Midlands area.
Finally, please see the events at the Royal Academy of Music below. Of particular interest to my students and anyone else's accordion student especially those intending to go on to further education, is the Accordion Department Open Day which has been organised on a sunday (14th Nov) especially so that young students who can't always make the events at the RAM due to being at school/college can attend. So young players don't miss it, this event is there for you.
I will email soon about my next show The Accordionist very soon.

Love

Romano

Satisfied Customer

A customer wrote a letter of thanks :

'Dear Mr Accordion man and Jeremy, i must write to thank you for your infinite patience to me in choosing an instrument! I know it's much like a learner driver buying a rolls royce (to me!) but I'm absolutely reveling in it's lovely tone - my playing is improving quicker as I can't put it down! Best wishes to Jeremy in his forthcoming marriage, thank you again, regards (name removed).'

We are delighted that we made such a good impression - the customer must be totally satisfied with their purchase. A musical instrument is a personal item, none more so than the accordion. In this respect, the customer's were certainly no burden, we are happy to have them make the right choice, in their own time.

Call to action

Dear Accordion Friends,

Many accordionists in the UK have over the years selflessly sought to get the accordion recognised and put on equal footing with other musical instruments. This is probably the one thing that unites all accordionists - recognition and respect for the instrumnent.
In 2005 Trinity/Guildhall took the brave step of introducing a Standard Bass and Free Bass Syllabus for the accordion. Most of my students have taken these exams and some have passed and one or two have failed but I am confident that they are being judged on the same criteria as other instrumentalists which makes victory sweeter when they get a good pass mark.
Though there has been a take up it has not been sufficient to keep the syllabus going and they have decided to drop it for something watered down and frankly pointless. We need equal status with other instruments.
Please, please, please do something for your instrument and write a short message to this email address info@trinitycollege.co.uk to save our accordion syllabus.
The BCA and NAO will not do it for you for their own reasons, you'll have to do it yourself and remember that Trinity/Guildhall like the Associated Board is not only a government accredited syllabus but is recognised internationally holding exams all over the world.
Maybe if we all pull together FOR ONCE instead of being divided we may do something worthwhile for our young accordionists and people who are new to the instrument.

PLEASE!!!!! If we bombard them with enough messages they might see the potential in the instrument to keep the syllabus going. It's a slim chance but it's worth a try. WE can do it.

Many thanks

Romano Viazzani

Satisfied customer from abroad!?

We have recently spread our wings to the far reaches of sunny Cyprus! An accordion teacher over there saw an accordion (a Hohner to be precise) on our website and phoned us up.

'very pleased with the accordion - excellent service', was her response.

If you are from abroad, don't let that stop you from ordering - we can, and indeed have, shipped overseas. If you see an accordion you'd like to buy, just phone us - it's a simple as that.

We attended as the only V accordion dealer and had a fantastic time.
There was lots of interest on our trade stand with our demonstration instruments in great demand. Look out for the results to follow, you can get more info on the Roland V accordions by going to the link at the top left handside of our front web page.

Thanks for the book, I'm looking forward to getting started, but I have 3 under-4-year-olds, so I'll not be going very fast!
Many thanks for your help

The Woking Pianothon

The Woking Pianothon took place at The Wolsey centre on Saturday 15th March 2008.

Organised by Sue Hamilton (local teacher). It was quite simply a wonderful day with over 80 pianists performing. Students as young as 5 years old playing their first pieces to accomplished concerts pianists and duos.

Handel pianos and Electronic Accordions Ltd provided 2 pianos for the event and also a stand with information on pianos and accordions.

The Mayor of Woking and his wife were in attendance as were the local press. Sue Hamilton should be congratulated for organising such a great event and here's hoping for a similar event in 2009.
